Getting irregular error messages

Hi,

First of all I want to say how much I appreciate your application; it has really made my life easier! However, the last couple of months I have been getting irregular error messages when trying to connect to my desktop Mac through the 3G network (in Sweden) via my iPhone. Approx 4 out of 5 times I get the following error: “Connection Closed: The server closed the connection” when the connection status says “loading screen” (never during the earlier stages of the connection procedure). I then have to try to reconnect 2-5 times before the app manages to establish a working connection.
I have been trying to locate the cause; I think these error messages first appeared en masse when I upgraded to Snow Leopard, but since I upgraded some time ago I can’t be really sure. I’ve also upgraded my iphone OS a couple of times since the problem first appeared, without any changes to the above situation.

Do you have any ideas of what might be causing this? Any possible resolutions?

I use the following setup:

iPhone 3GS (3.1.2)
Jaadu VNC 3.0.1

iMac C2D
Vine Server
Jaadu VNC Connect
Netgear RangeMax router

Best regards,

PS. I have also been in touch with the Jaadu-people concerning this. During this dialogue I tried switching to the generic OSX Screen sharing method and the connection problems went away at once - so I figure the problem must have something to do with the Vine application.

Check the Console utility on your Mac and see if Vine is logging any error messages.

I can’t seem to find any errors. One strange thing is that at the same time as I get the error message the VineServer.log file gets erased and the server starts over again with the following text:

Again, when the error occurs, what has been entered in the log gets erased and the above gets written. I think its the exact same thing that happens when you manually push the “Restart Server” button… Could the server automatically restarting itself each time I get the mentioned connection error?

  • when I try other servers (OSX generic, RealVNC Enterprise) the problem doesn’t seem to occur at all…

One might think that this solves the problem. However, I think that Vine is better for my purposes than the other server solutions.

No ideas? Anyone?

Yes, Vine could definitely be restarting – there is an option under “Startup” called “Restart server if it stops unexpectedly”. If that’s checked and the underlying server crashes it will restart.

However, I’m not sure what would be causing the crash in the first place.
