Ultimately you must read, look at the issues in each technology and finally decide on a solution that meets your needs. VPN is a virtual private network, and VNC is a Virtual Network Connection (or some say computer). Bottomline, both can be ‘secured’ with encryption schemes, and both have advocates that claim one is better than the other.

Please see our VNC Online FAQ in our Redstone User Forum 🙂 right here.

Also take a look at the overviews of VPN and VNC on wikipedia.

> **[Virtual private network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN)**
>
> A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running across a VPN may therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network. Encryption is a common, although not an inherent, part of a VPN connection.
> VPN technology was developed to provide access to corpora...

> **[How a VPN (Virtual Private Network) Works](https://computer.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm)**
>
> More people are using virtual private networks to establish secure communication over the internet, protecting their private information and allowing remote employees to connect to the private corporate networks.

> **[Virtual Network Computing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VNC)**
>
> In computing, Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop-sharing system that uses the Remote Frame Buffer protocol (RFB) to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical-screen updates back in the other direction, over a network.
> VNC is platform-independent – there are clients and servers for many GUI-based operating systems and for Java. Multiple clients may connect to a VNC server at the same time....

Thanks Todd,
I checked out realvnc and i saw that they are using 2048-bit RSA keys to verify identity. What Security is in play with SSH and VineServer

Deciding between VPN and VNC for secure access to your work computers depends on your specific needs and priorities:

VPN:
Creates a secure tunnel between your device and the work network, allowing you to access any resources on that network (files, applications, printers) as if you were physically present.
Both software-based (open-source or subscription) and hardware-based (dedicated VPN routers) options exist.
Advantages:
Security: Encrypts all traffic, protecting your data from eavesdropping and interception.
Versatility: Provides access to all network resources and applications.
Centralized control: IT can manage user access and security policies across the entire network.
No local software installation needed: Access from any device with a supported VPN client.

VNC:
Remote desktop software that allows you to view and control the desktop of a specific work computer.
Requires software installation on both the host computer and your device.
Advantages:
Performance: Generally faster than VPN, with minimal impact on network speed.
Simpler setup: Easier to configure and use than a VPN, especially for individual connections.
Granular control: Provides direct access and control over a specific computer’s desktop environment.

Use VPN if:
You need secure access to multiple resources and applications on the work network.
Security and centralized control are your top priorities.
You connect from various devices or locations. If you are thinking of buying a VPN. So, you have 2 options NordVPN and PureVPN. Because they are reputable VPNs as well as they have the best add-ons.
Use VNC if:
You only need to access a specific computer and its desktop environment.
