Starting Vine via ssh and connecting through ssh tunnel

Hi all,

I have ssh access to a machine with vine on it, and am trying to log into it via ssh, start up vine from the command line, and then connect to it through the ssh tunnel I’ve created (I’ve been tunnelling port 5901 via ssh and telling vine to use that same port). The problem is, every time I try to connect, I get an “Unable to obtain base address” error on the server side and a “VNC server closed connection” error on the client side. The client is an Ubuntu linux machine running Tight VNC Viewer Is it even possible to do what I am trying to do? Any information/guidance that you can give me would be appreciated.

You can do this, but your shell login doesn’t have a GUI associated with it.
If you want to access the console screen (ie whatever is showing on the monitor) you can do that by running the VNC server as root.
