If I had a gross failure in my app and needed to recapture a good chunk of my images, what is the best method to do this? I don’t need to recapture every one just the ones that fail.

You can do this fairly quickly with the image doctor. Just run the script(s) with the Image Doctor set to Manual (Run–>Doctor–>Manual). It will fire up the Image Not found panel, from there you can run the image doctor and quick capture the images that are changed as you run your scripts.
