Connex Help Redux

I read suggestions to “Mike” post … port forwarding is set to pass 5900 on my DSL Modem and also on my mom’s DSL router … are we all helping our elderly molthers figure out how to get online?

Both of computers can get to gotomyvnc.com with a pass on Display Zero.

Yet Vine always tells me connection failure/connection refused. And it happens instantly as if never leaving local wireless net in my home.

If I view IPFW.Log I see (edited BTW)

Feb 9 13:39:26 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP 192.168.254.1:50297 MOM.xxx.xxx.xxx:5900 out via en1
Feb 9 13:39:26 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP Mom.xxx.xxx.xxx:5900 192.168.254.1:50297 in via en1

BTW, I set up a rule to log outbound and inbound 5900 so I could verify I was in fact sending packets.

Help please?

Hmm, it should be working for you. You aren’t attempting to do SSH I presume. Are you using DNS resolution for the external machine or are you specifying the IP directly?

specifying the IP … and as you see by my posting of the ipfw.log. IT saw me and IT replied … just that all I get from Vine-Viewer is connection refused and connection refused.

here … I just tried it again …
Feb 9 14:26:11 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP 192.168.254.1:50455 Moms.x.x.x:5900 out via en1
Feb 9 14:26:11 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP Moms.x.x.x:5900 192.168.254.1:50455 in via en1

now, doesn’t tht tell me that all is well up to Vine-Viewer?

I have tried this all weekend now and get the same as I just got a minute ago:
Feb 12 06:36:40 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP 192.168.254.1:49346 Moms.x.x.x:5900 out via en1
Feb 12 06:36:40 Z123 ipfw: 6016 Accept TCP Moms.x.x.x:5900 192.168.254.1:49346 in via en1

I don’t doubt I am doing something wrong. I just can’t find out what it is. Vibe-Viewer tells me ‘Connection Refused’ … can you suggest which end is refusing?

Ok, first thing to verify, try going to that port from a browser, http://MOMSIP:5900

You won’t get remote control, but you should get:

RFB 003.008

If you don’t get anything then it’s a network problem. If you get something else, like RFB 003.889 then you are connecting to ARD that isn’t configured to work with VNC.

then it’s a network problem

Safari can?t connect to the server.
Safari can?t open the page ?http://Moms-IP:5900/? because it could not connect to the server ?Moms-IP?.

well, as you saw. ipfw shows the passed outbound and inbound. I just now shut my firewall off, uninstalled, so to speak, and no matter, still won’t.

Make sure that you are using your Mom’s EXTERNAL IP address, (although I’m pretty sure that you are since you removed it from the firewall log).

You can try using Network Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) to run a traceroute to your Moms IP, and see that the routing is working (getting you from your ISP to hers). After that point it’s a question of the forwarding rules at your Mom’s end, and making sure that VNC is running there.
